2011 Roca Hotel Awards to the hotel initiative

The reward for a good job

The hotel industry participated in a must-attend event at the Roca Barcelona Gallery to collect the Roca Awards to the Hotel Initiative, which are organized by Gran Hotel Turismo magazine on a biennial basis.

The granting of the famous monolith by sculptor Domènec Fita was the highlight of an evening in which not only all winners but also all nominees reaped the fruit of their good job.

Close to its 20th anniversary, Gran Hotel Turismo magazine played once again an important role within the hotel and tourism industry by granting the Roca Awards to the Hotel Initiative. This was the ninth year that the magazine organized the awards, which were sponsored by Roca for the first time. The Roca Awards to the Hotel Initiative, established in 1993, acknowledge and pay tribute to the hotels and hoteliers for their innovative contribution to a constantly moving sector that keeps reinventing itself and surprising us. Therefore, these awards are a great prestige for those who work to improve the tourist market, the main driving force of the Spanish economy and on which Gran Hotel Turismo magazine also depends.

The awards ceremony was held at the Roca Barcelona Gallery, a glass-façade building developed by the OAB architecture office. Roca’s flagship building is a work by Borja, Carlos and Lucía Ferrater that is used as a social and cultural venue in Barcelona. Apart from Roca’s sponsorship, the Awards to the Hotel Initiative also had the collaboration of Amenities Pack, Arcoroc, Chef & Sommelier and Caves Torelló. More than 200 guests from the Spanish hotel and tourism industry attended the event. Also present at the awards ceremony were Sònia Recasens, Second Deputy Mayor and Councillor of Tourism at Barcelona City Council; Alberto Fernández-Díaz, First VicePresident of the Regional Council of Barcelona and Head of Tourism; and Ignasi de Delàs, Deputy Director-General of Turisme de Barcelona.

The Chairman of Grupo Curt Ediciones and publisher of Gran Hotel Turismo, Enrique Curt, recalled in his opening speech that “Curt Ediciones has worked very closely with the hotel and tourism industry since the magazine was first launched”. Curt also highlighted “the thoroughness, competence and seriousness of the Jury entrusted with the selection of the winners of the awards, who are sometimes chosen based on extremely subtle differences”.

After a long day deliberating at the Bagués Hotel, the Jury chose the winners. However, their names remained a secret until the envelope containing the winner of each category was opened: Architecture, Renovation, Remodelling, Holiday Hotel, Gastronomy, Conference & Convention, Health, Rural, Urban, Web Image, Hotel Chain, Tourism Promotion and Grand Jury Prize. After the awards ceremony, the event continued with a cocktail dinner party. The guests had the chance to taste food served by Prats Fatjó and to visit the different stands offering drinks. Some of the companies represented at the dinner party include Cinco Jotas, with a ham tasting; Torelló, with the cava Torelló Brut Nature Gran Reserva as a welcome drink, red wine Raimonda Reserva and white wine Blanc Tranquille; distribution company Hisumer, with several gins such as Brecon Special Reserve, Pink 47 Premium, Geranium, Gin Edinburgh, Boë and The Duke Munich; company Fever-Tree, with the brand’s premium tonics; and Bardinet, with the rum Negrita 8 years.
