2016 Roca Awards to the Hotel Initiaitve

The most innovative and international awards

The Roca Awards to Hotel Initiative were presented during a dinner celebrated at the Roca Barcelona Gallery. The event, hosted by the journalist Jordi Llompart, gathered around 250 guests, among them representatives of the hospitality sector, suppliers of hotel equipment and members of the press.

Enrique Curt, founding president of Curt Ediciones; Laura Curt, director of the 11th edition of the Roca Awards to Hotel Initiative and editor of Curt Ediciones; Enrique Curt Iborra, CEO of Curt Ediciones and Xavier Torras, Roca's brand and communication director addressed all guests during the award ceremony of these prestigious prizes and praised the high quality of the Spanish and international hotels, these being nominated to these awards for the first time. A sector that is experiencing a boom with great investments, with new national and international projects being constantly presented.

The jury, made up of renowned professionals of the hotel and tourist sectors, chose the names of the winners in each category during an intense deliberation day at the Cotton House Hotel in Barcelona, which were kept secret until the envelopes with the winners in each category were opened. A highlight of the Roca Awards to Hotel Initiative this year were two new categories, such as the Sustainable Hotel/We Are Water Foundation Award or the Honour Award in Recognition to a Hotel or Tourist Personality.

Moreover, these awards became international for the first time and recognised the best hotel initiatives in Portugal and Dubai, two booming tourist destinations where Spanish hoteliers are opening or plan to open new hotels. Thus, the categories of the eleventh edition were: architecture, refurbishment, beach resort, mountain resort, gastronomy, conferences and conventions, health, city, sustainable-We Are Water Foundation award, hotel innovation in Dubai and hotel innovation in Portugal. Moreover, the jury unanimously decided that same day to present two special awards: the Jury Grand Award and the Honour Award in Recognition to a Hotel and Tourist Personality. The Jury Grand Award went to Room Mate Hotels and to its president and founder, Kike Sarasola. The Honour Award in Recognition to a Hotel and Tourist Personality went to Rufino Calero, president of Vincci Hoteles, for his contribution to the Spanish hotel and tourist sector for more than 60 years.
